In the year 2002, Tioman Island was accorded the Duty Free status.

Most of the Duty Free shops are available in Kampung Tekek. Cigarettes and liquor especially are extremely cheap and they are readily available in the Duty Free shops in Tekek. There are several Duty Free shops that sell Duty Free goods for you to bring home to your loved ones. There are also several Duty Free shops at the Tioman Airport for you to buy souvenirs to bring home. Chocolates and perfumes are also available here at these shops.

Apart from that, PKNP (Perbadanan Kemajuan Negeri Pahang) is currently building several Duty Free shoplots to cater for more goods to be sold to tourists. These shoplots are currently in the midst of construction. They are located in front of Persona Island Resort, Kampung Tekek.
